I AM AN ORIGINAL
Buttercup STEAM Camp is a unique week-long adventure for girls to learn, build and code in a fun and supportive environment. Students work hands-on creating Steampunk themed projects that incorporate elements of
STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts Mathematics).
Our Mission
It is our primary mission to reduce the gender and racial gap in technology professions by inspiring girls and girls of color with an adventurous and memorable introduction to coding and engineering. We believe the experience of creating an app that runs on a device in one week will spark their enthusiasm and will propel the girls into pursuing further tech education.
About Camp
ButterCup STEAM camp is geared towards children at the beginner level of programming/coding. We will be using tools that are easily learned by children who have no programming experience. Our summercamp encourages campers to Imagine, Program, and Share their creations and also see what other kids have done. Buttercup STEAM is a fun introduction to coding, robotics, and steampunk. We use tools and programs that allow each camper to achieve early success manipulating code, graphics, and sounds.

What is Steampunk?
Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction or science fantasy that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery. Steampunk is a subculture encompassing fashion, music, literature, movies, DIY model-making, and gaming. Taking inspiration from a retrofuturistic mashup between a Victorian aesthetic and cyberpunk, Steampunk encompasses a sense of longing not for the actual past, but for a futuristic past that never was, and turns that longing into artistic expressions of music, literature, art, and entertainment. The DIY and repurposing aspects keep steampunk a flexible, malleable form of expression with a spirit of adventure. Often, steampunk combines the Victorian era’s fascination with the natural world with the entrepreneurship of invention, giving way to such creations as the mechanical creatures in Nantes, France, the Nautilus, a submarine modeled after sea creatures in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and even reinterpretations of mechanical singing bird boxes. ButtercupSTEAM will be utilizing the DIY and artistic nature of the Steampunk genre in conjunction with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) in each week long project (adventure) to spark their imaginations.
